Patent number: 8480500Abstract: A full-round head nail having an offset head is configured with a gusset formed integrally between an undersurface of the offset head and a superior portion of a shank. The head of the nail is relatively thin, and the shank is positioned radially off center of the round head such that no heel is formed at a point tangential to both the head and the shank. The gusset has a lofted surface tapering radially from a roundness at the zero heel to a taper at the toe. The gusset reinforces the junction of the shank with the head, supports the toe of the head, and distributes the force of a load on the head through a longitudinal axis of the shank, preventing the toe from bending or yielding and prevents the shank from yielding to the stresses of the load applied.Type: GrantFiled: December 29, 2010Date of Patent: July 9, 2013Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: William L. Gabriel, Zafar I Ali, Alvis H. Ferrell, Daniel P. McDonald, James W. Robinson, Donald E. Bergstrom

Patent number: 8087281Abstract: A method to make a flanged pin is described. The method includes feeding wire through a forming die whereby the wire is deformed to create a straight pin. The straight pin is then fed from the forming die to a heading die having a pre-formed cavity where a first portion of the straight pin is located in the forming die and a second portion of the straight pin is located in the heading die. A portion of the pin is secured in the forming and heading die, having a portion of the straight pin disposed in a gap defined by a space between the heading die and the forming die. As the die gap is closed, the portion of the straight pin is displaced into a pre-formed cavity thereby creating a flange.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2008Date of Patent: January 3, 2012Assignees: Bead Industries, Inc., Total Electronics LLCInventors: James W. Patent number: 7104109Abstract: A cold or hot-forging heading die used in metalworking to form a “head” on the end of a metal rod is configured to provide two heading cavities formed in opposite ends of the carbide insert. The heading die of the invention comprises a hardened steel ring with a cylindrical carbide insert having a through bore with a first cavity machined concentrically with the bore in one end of the carbide insert. The die is then inverted and a second cavity formed in the opposite end of the insert. The second cavity can be identical to the first cavity or provide the shape for an alternate head configuration.Type: GrantFiled: May 8, 2003Date of Patent: September 12, 2006Assignee: D-M-E CompanyInventor: Bruce C. Patent number: 6676528Abstract: The present invention relates to a tool for the manufacture of an offset head nail, said nail comprising a shank and a head, said head being placed with its center being offset to the center of the shank, wherein said tool is one of a set of at least two tools acting mutually on a blank for a nail, said tool comprising a front side with a reception opening and a top side to be used when forming the head, said reception opening being shaped to form an impression in the blank and to fixate said blank during forming of a head on the blank. The invention further relates to a use of the aforementioned tool. Nails with offset heads are used in nail guns, where a strip of nails is used for shooting multiple times before reloading a new strip of nails.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2002Date of Patent: January 13, 2004Assignee: Enkotec A/SInventor: Jens Carlsen

Patent number: 5651739Abstract: A machine for producing e.g. nails by providing oblong shanks (3) with an enlarged heads in one end (4) thereof comprising a rotatably tool ring (2) having a plurality, of holding tools for in one angle position during rotation of the tool ring receiving the shanks, and in another angle position securing the shanks so that they extend radially of the tool ring with each shank having its said end protruding inside the tool ring. Said machine also comprising a rotatably roll (1) mounted inside the tool ring at the securing position of this and adapted for deforming said protruding end of the shanks successively to provide enlarged heads thereon. Said machine further comprising a bending device (25) mounted between the receiving position and the rotatably roll for bending the protruding end of the shanks. Thus the machine according to the invention is able to provide on shanks enlarged heads having larger diameter in proportion to the diameter of the shank than known before.Type: GrantFiled: March 10, 1995Date of Patent: July 29, 1997Assignee: Encotech A/SInventor: Jens Bregnar Carlsen

Patent number: 5533379Abstract: A method and apparatus for forming a head, having a controlled predetermined shape on an end of an elongate member, such as a wire, which is formed into a fastener, where an end portion of the wire is secured in a predetermined position and axially compressed so as to expand a predetermined amount of wire material radially outwardly and thereby form the head on the wire, and where material flow is directed during axial compression so as to provide the controlled predetermined shape of the head.Type: GrantFiled: June 7, 1995Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Illinois Tool Works Inc.Inventors: John Binder, Henry W. Schniedermeier, Lawrence S. Shelton, Henry A. Sygnator, William L. Gabriel

Patent number: 5533377Abstract: A metal rod (20) having a conical or pyramidal cut extremity (20a) is used to make a mandrel for blind rivets. The rod is held in place between a pair of die segments (11) such that its end (26) of a preset length, including the tip protrudes from an upper surface (14) of the segments. Subsequently, a free intermediate portion of the swageable end (26) is axially compressed to form a mandrel head (27) by a punch (12) which has a lower face (17) parallel to the upper surface (14) of the segments with a conical or pyramidal recess (18) formed on the end. The free intermediate portion of the swageable end (26) swells radially outward to form the head (27) having a flat flange (31) from which the tip intrudes. The mandrel, which has the head formed uniformly without any eccentricity about the longitudinal axis of a mandrel body, can be produced inexpensively using a prior art nail manufacturing apparatus.Type: GrantFiled: August 1, 1994Date of Patent: July 9, 1996Assignee: Yugenkaisha Shinjo SeisakushoInventor: Katsumi Shinjo
