Volume Measurement Patents (Class 33/1V)
  • Patent number: 6138371
Abstract: A sizing device or gauge is provided for measuring whether an article such as a package for delivery has dimensions that lie within predetermined values of length, width and volume. The sizing device is formed by a receptacle that has a flat rectangular base wall which defines predetermined maximum values of length and width for the item, and a pair of adjacent upstanding side walls portions of which decrease in height away from adjoining ends of the walls, the height decrease being in inverse relation to the square of a respective one of the maximum height and width values. The device is useful for example in determining whether items meet the specifications of a delivery service segregating items into different categories.

  • Patent number: 6028270
Abstract: The mass of stockpiled materials is determined from detailed measurements of the elevation of the pile surface at many points and the measurement of the gravitational field along several profile lines across the surface of the stockpiled material. The elevation measurements allow the calculation of the pile volume. Measured gravity values are adjusted using standard gravity corrections in such a manner as to imply all gravity data are collected along the same reference datum. Variations in the corrected gravity values are assumed to be caused solely by the pile material. The gravity measurements are interpreted using analytical and statistical methods to determine the volume-average bulk density value of the pile material. The pile volume is multiplied by the volume-average bulk density to obtain the weight of the stockpiled material.

  • Patent number: 5909013
Abstract: A dimensional weighing apparatus is disclosed which has a weighing scale for determining the actual weight of a carton, and a conveyor means along which cartons are moved after being weighed to pass the cartons through a measuring station at which the length, width and height of the cartons are measured. A first measuring means measures both the height and length as the cartons move through the measuring station by means of a member that rides up the leading vertical face of the cartons to measure the height and then across the top surface thereof to measure the length. A second measuring means measures the width of the cartons as they move through the measuring station by means of carton contact members mounted along the side surfaces of the carton and move in and out of contact with the carton.

  • Patent number: 5528517
Abstract: A method and device for measuring the dimensions of a three-dimensional object (8) wherein the object is placed in a measuring corner which defines an x, y, z three-dimensional coordinate system, and wherein in connection with each coordinate at least one graded scale means (9) is provided. Optically machine-legible codes are provided along the respective graded scale means or a combined code for two axes together is provided in at least one of the coordinate planes. The projection of the objects on each coordinate (x,y,z) is registered by means of an opto/electrical reader ( 1,2) and the signals from the reader are fed into a computer (4) which, on the basis of the received signals for each coordinate, calculates and prints out, or displays, the characteristic data of the object. It can be used, for example, for freight charge calculations relating an object.

  • Patent number: 5502898
Abstract: A field portable site survey system includes a portable computer interfaced directly with a rangefinder of the type which needs no reflector, e.g. a rangefinder which receives a signal from a feature of a survey site by backscattering of an incident beam such as a laser beam. A computer program causes the computer to prompt an operator to use the range finder to take measurements appropriate for calculation of the volume of a survey site according to its shape or of its component shapes. The computer calculates the volume in realtime. If the density has been entered into the computer weight will also be calculated.

  • Patent number: 5477622
Abstract: A hand-held measuring device for measure the dimensional weight of the boxes in a shipment of freight includes a gun shaped housing having a tracing wheel located at a front end of the elongated portion of the housing. A handle is located at the back end of the elongated housing and extends downward therefrom. A trigger switch is also located at the back end of the elongated housing. In operation, the user of the devices holds the measuring device so as to place the wheel in contact with one corner of a freight box. The user then runs the wheel to an opposite corner to measure one dimension of the box. Afterwards the user presses the trigger to input that dimension into the device. After the length, height, and width of the box has been entered into the device, they are multiplied together to determine the volume of the box.

Abstract: A cooling/warming control system of an air-conditioner comprises a transmitting portion and a receiving portion for radiating ultra-sonic waves from the air-conditioner to a room wall surface and receiving the ultra-sonic pulses reflected therefrom using a number of ultra-sonic wave sensors. A microcomputer calculates the time interval from the moment the radiation of the ultra-sonic pulses are transmitted until the reflecting wave pulses are received, measures the room area or volume and compares the measurement with the previous set area or volume, determines the magnitude of the cooling/warming load and then controls the load operating system connected thereto in order to operate loads in multiple stages according to the room temperature.
