Patent number: 8810980Abstract: Embodiments of the invention are directed to systems and methods using an interruption device for automatically re-routing power upon the occurrence of an event. The interruption device may interrupt the flow of power to an external device upon the detection of an event, such as a circuit overload or short circuit. Interrupting the flow of power may cause power to be cut off to a receiving connector, which supplies power to the external device, by re-routing the flow of power away from the receiving connector by the use of relay switches. By interrupting and re-routing the flow of power, an electrical fire, damage to the external device or other hazard may be prevented. Once the source of the problem, such as a defective external device, has been removed or fixed, the flow of power may be re-routed back to the receiving connector.Type: GrantFiled: August 6, 2011Date of Patent: August 19, 2014Inventors: Ferdinand Villegas Legaspi, Michael McGuire, Sr., Dana Denton

Patent number: 7895730Abstract: A method of controlling the effective impedance of a low-impedance high-temperature superconducting cable (“HTS cable”). Passive or active control circuitry is used to create a current in the shielding conductor of the HTS cable which opposes the current in the primary conductor. In the case of a three-phase conductor, magnetic cross-coupling between the phases is exploited. The magnitude of the magnetic field is used to alter the HTS cable's effective impedance. The result is the creation of a controlled and substantially-higher effective impedance for the HTS cable. The creation of the higher impedance allows the HTS cable to be connected in parallel with conventional lines while regulating the amount of current flowing through the HTS cable.Type: GrantFiled: October 2, 2006Date of Patent: March 1, 2011Assignee: Florida State University Research FoundationInventors: Thomas L. Patent number: 5793593Abstract: The present invention features a method and an apparatus for distributing electrical power from a power source to a distribution transformer, using at least one hot-phase conductor, a neutral conductor and an independent ground conductor. The neutral conductor is connected to the ground conductor at only one point in the distribution system, preferably at or near the power source. Normal imbalance current flows only in the neutral conductor. Return current flow in the earth is eliminated by the single point neutral-to-ground connection. Magnetic field (MF) generation in this power distribution system is thus reduced and stray voltage problems eliminated. In addition, high-impedance faults are easily detected because the only current ever flowing in the ground conductor is fault current. A method is also described for converting existing power distribution systems to the independent ground topology of the present invention.Type: GrantFiled: October 24, 1995Date of Patent: August 11, 1998Assignee: New York State Electric & Gas CorporationInventors: Robert G.
