  • Patent number: 8047464
Abstract: In a method and apparatus for controlling the deployment of a towline connecting a mooring craft to an ejected object comprising the steps of monitoring velocity to determine when a point for optimum braking has been achieved and then engaging a brake system to retard deployment of the towline, a DC motor augments and controls the brake system. The DC motor further controls the retrieval of the object. A cutter mechanism uses a first blade to grip the towing cable to maintain tension thereon as a second blade cuts the cable. A spring biased boom in combination with spring biased fins on the ejected object rapidly deploys the object from its storage housing. A locking mechanism secures the deployment mechanism in a stable locked position upon the object reaching its fully extended position.

  • Patent number: 6971605
Abstract: A cable take-up device has a central spool situated between opposing first and second spool end walls, wherein the first spool end wall is rotatable and bears a cable guide thereon which reciprocates along the length of the spool during such rotation. Cable inserted through a cable guide aperture in the cable guide is thereby wound about and along the length of the spool when the first spool end wall is rotated to cause the cable guide to orbit the spool. The first spool end wall preferably bears a feed aperture therein which feeds cable into the cable guide aperture in a direction oriented generally axially with respect to the spool, with the feed aperture being defined within a feed tube which protrudes from the first spool end wall to define a cranking handle.

  • Patent number: 6276625
Abstract: A method of ROV tether storage without the use of electrical rotary slip rings, and a tether storage drum. The heart of the Tether Storage System (TSS) invention involves the rotating beam with a powered tether sheave and guide plate on a circular track. The concept of a rotating beam with a powered tether sheave and beam drive motors in a single unit is uniquely different than any other tether storage and handling system. Rotating the sheave about the TSS frame's vertical axis is also unique. To accomplish this, preferably a drive motor is mounted at each end of the beam. A drive wheel on each motor reacts against the channel track to rotate the beam. Rollers at each end of the beam support and guide it. The tether is stored in a large circular basket below the sheave in the cylindrical frame. A guide plate attached to the sheave beam rests on top of the tether in the storage basket.

  • Patent number: 5887815
Abstract: An electrical cable management device for use in mining and other applications where there are size restrictions on equipment. The device is a round stationary drum, around which travels a carriage for winding, unwinding and storing hot electrical cable. The device is mounted on skids and is portable and can be located away from the mining activity while still being able to manage and control the winding and unwinding of electrical cable in response to movement of the mining equipment. The device does not require electrical split ring connectors, rotating collector rings, brushes or the like, but provides a continuous cable from a power source to the moveable mining equipment. The orbiting carriage is driven by an electric motor for winding cable and automatically becomes free wheeling when cable is unwound from the drum.

  • Patent number: 5772152
Abstract: A cord holder having an outer rotatable housing with an inwardly extending inner spool which engages and rotates within a concentrically mounted larger stationary hollow cord storage spool support. The inner spool fits within the hollow larger spool support in a telescoping manner. Two self-stick pads mount the spool support to a vertical support surface such as an appliance, wall or the like. A cord stored around the larger hollow spool support may be withdrawn through a hole in the outer housing when needed. In an alternate embodiment, a housing with a cord exit opening has a center spool containing a cord around it. The spool is fixed to the housing while a rotatable flat support with a center circular indentation can be mounted on and rotated around a spool extension. An appropriate opening in the flat support allows the stored cord to be withdrawn from the spool.

  • Patent number: 5485972
Abstract: An apparatus for producing a wound cable pack having uniform pitch and inporating a twist per turn in a cable. A drum is constrained to rotational movement around an axis of rotation. A non-rotating spool, sized to fit within the drum and having a central longitudinal axis coaxial with the drum's axis of rotation, is constrained to linear movement along the axis of rotation within the drum. A cable feeding assembly is mounted to the drum for rotation therewith. The cable feeding assembly leads the cable over one end of the spool prior to being fed onto the spool from a feed point. In this way, a twist is induced in the cable as the cable feeding assembly orbits about the spool. An electromechanical system is operatively connected to the drum and the spool to synchronize the rotational movement of the drum with the linear movement of the spool.

Abstract: Cable is stored a receptacle by a coiling mechanism. In the coiling mechanism, an arm receives the cable at an axis, and supports the cable as it passes from the axis to a feed end located at a point radially spaced from the axis. A cable driver forces the cable into the arm at the axis and toward the feed end.
