Patent number: 10719788Abstract: A computer-implemented method of generating a set of goals is presented. The method entails receiving user input that includes items and an input value associated with each of the items. Individual values are assigned to the items based on the input value. The individual values are then summed to generate a total value, and the items are ranked according to the contributions of their respective individual values to the total value. A difference between the total value and a corresponding reference value is determined. The input value that is associated with the highest-ranking item is changed, and the total value and the difference are then recalculated using the changed input value. The process is repeated with the next highest-ranked item and the next until a condition is fulfilled. A goal is defined based on the changed input value of the items at the time the condition is fulfilled.Type: GrantFiled: October 4, 2011Date of Patent: July 21, 2020Inventors: Torin J. A mobile computing device, such as a smartphone, executing such software monitors, tracks and/or adjusts caloric intake, energy expenditure taking into account nutritional information and behavioral factors. The mobile computing device receives food consumption, exercise-related, behavior and other input using speech input and the device's GPS subsystem to ease data entry burden on users and to promote continued long-term usage. The system rewards user goal achievement in an automatic, seamless manner, through, for example, downloading music, books, or other media.Type: GrantFiled: January 3, 2013Date of Patent: April 8, 2014Inventors: Mark E. Patent number: 8680408Abstract: An electronic scale functions in a normal and a high sensitivity measurement regions. The weights of mother alone and mother plus infant are measured in the high sensitivity region. The difference between the two measurements is the weight of infant alone, which is displayed with a finer scale interval than the normal one. The high sensitivity region is automatically shifted for covering the two measurements. The degree of shift is stored to correct the absolute mother weight. The infant weight is transmitted to a mobile phone, which displays growth curve of infant in comparison with a statistics growth curves provided by a server through the internet. The infant weight is uploaded to the server for incorporation into the statistics. The statistics is based on data gathered form a plurality of mobile phones, which are each authenticated to increase reliability of the statistics against false weight data upload.Type: GrantFiled: October 9, 2009Date of Patent: March 25, 2014Assignee: NL Giken IncorporatedInventor: Masahide Tanaka

Patent number: 8605952Abstract: The present system and method provides a more precise way to record food and beverage intake than traditional methods. The present disclosure provides custom software for use in mobile computing devices that include a digital camera. Photos captured by mobile digital devices are analyzed with image processing and comparisons to certain databases to allow a user to discretely record foods eaten. Specifically, the user captures images of the meal or snack before and after eating. The foods pictured are identified. Image processing software may identify the food or provide choices for the user. Once a food is identified and volume of the food is estimated, nutrient databases are used for calculating final portion sizes and nutrient totals.Type: GrantFiled: December 27, 2012Date of Patent: December 10, 2013Assignee: Purdue Research Foundation, Inc.Inventors: Carol Boushey, Edward John Delp, David Scott Ebert, Kyle DelMar Lutes, Deborah Kerr

Patent number: 8398546Abstract: A nutrition and activity management system is disclosed that monitors energy expenditure of an individual through the use of a body-mounted sensing apparatus. The apparatus is particularly adapted for continuous wear. The system is also adaptable or applicable to measuring a number of other physiological parameters and reporting the same and derivations of such parameters. A weight management embodiment is directed to achieving an optimum or preselected energy balance between calories consumed and energy expended by the user. An adaptable computerized nutritional tracking system is utilized to obtain data regarding food consumed, Relevant and predictive feedback is provided to the user regarding the mutual effect of the user's energy expenditure, food consumption and other measured or derived or manually input physiological contextual parameters upon progress toward said goal.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2004Date of Patent: March 19, 2013Assignee: BodyMedia, Inc.Inventors: Christopher Pacione, Steve Menke, David Andre, Eric Teller, Scott Safier, Raymond Pelletier, Mark Handel, Jonathan Farringdon, Eric Hsiung, Suresh Vishnubhatla, James Hanlon, John M.
